About

Jessica Maffia is a visual artist born and raised in New York City. Her art seeks the poetry in the mundane. She is excited by “the everyday” and honors the overlooked. She has been exhibiting her work throughout the US since 2009. Jessica exhibited 19 of her large, photorealistic pencil drawings of cracks and residue on walls during her solo exhibition at Denise Bibro Fine Art in September 2015. Her work was featured on the cover of Fabio Gironi's philosophy book Naturalizing Badiou: Mathematical Ontology and Structural Realism and several of her drawings can be found in the flat files of Pierogi gallery in downtown Manhattan. Jessica has been awarded 8 artist residency fellowships since 2014 at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony, Brush Creek Artist retreat, New York Mills Arts Retreat, 2 fellowships at the Vermont Studio Center, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, the HoloCenter, and Lacawac Artist’s Residency. In June 2016 Jessica was among the first recipients of a grant from the Hell’s Kitchen Foundation. She created an installation called Lanterns for Peace in various sites through the US in response to the 2016 presidential elections. Lanterns for Peace was on view at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, the town plaza in Taos, New Mexico, 3-Squared Gallery in Chelsea New York, Five Myles Gallery in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and FIGMENT on Governor’s Island.
