James Vanderberg is an abstract painter, working primarily in oils. The basis of his work is found in color interactions and the abstracted landscape. His paintings push the elements of landscape and the figure in that space through a process of building up layers. A painting might take months, even years to complete, with a final layer rolling over the scrumbled history beneath. Digging, sanding and over painting becomes a narrative of the process, and the discovery of the image. James Vanderberg earned his Master’s Degree from Hunter College in 2008. He has taught both University and High School level art for the past 8 years at Nassau Community College, Fordham University, Saint John’s Preparatory School, and Brooklyn Art Space, and The Art Students League of New York. His work has been presented at The Painting Center, Gallerie Gris Hudson, and Los Ojos Gallery Bushwick. In 2013 he was awarded an artist grant to the Vermont Studio Center Residency and he is an active member of the NY based artist collective OpeningsNYC.
