Peep-O-Rama Gallery

In the summer of 2002 chashama opened its then-newest exhibition gallery with the Peep-Show, an exhibition in the newly-renovated Peep-O-Rama Gallery. With its 24 hour $1 video booths, sex toys & VHS tapes the old Peep-O-Rama was once referred to as a "Porn Palace." When it was closed in July, it became the last porn shop to disappear from 42nd street. Since September 2002 the work dismantling and cleaning the former XXX shop has been a complete volunteer effort by the Chashama artists-in-residence with the payoff being a gallery of their very own.

With this space, chashama has continued to offer outlets to experimental artists who aren't usually granted such mainstream avenues of exposure. The gallery has offered a peep at the artists and their works, many of which were created right down the block in their 42nd street studios. chashama thanks all who have helped to make this venture a success and a source of wonder and excitement to both the artists and visitors.

IT'S FASHION WEEK - GIVE AWAY YOUR OLD CLOTHES IN STYLE AT TIMES SQUARE'S LAST PEEP SHOW!!

For the first time outside of Johannesburg's Apartheid Museum, Teboho Mahlatsi's film SOUTH AFRICA A TO Z will be shown in its original five-channel installation format as part of REVERSING THE FLOW: SOUTH AFRICA FEEDS THE SOUTH BRONX, a multimedia exhibition and food/clothing drive that draws on the energy of South Africa as a lead up to the country's 10th anniversary of freedom and democracy next year.

The venue is an unusual one: Peep-O-Rama which was the last classic Times Square peep show before it was shut down a year ago and turned into one of five adjacent theatre/exhibition spaces in the Chashama visual arts collaborative.

Chashama and JUNE16 present the exhibit, which runs until September 21 and is the main pick in this week's New York Press. Admission is a can of food or piece of clothing, to be distributed to youth in the South Bronx by Food Bank and other charities.

"South Africa has amazing resources to offer the world," Peter Griffin of JUNE16, the event's main curator, adds, "Our goal is to raise at least $5000 worth of donations for the South Bronx with South Africa as the source and inspiration."

SOUTH AFRICA A TO Z is presented by the African Film Festival. WBAI's Elombe Brathe w/S6K, Frederick Douglass Academy II, Sustainable South Bronx, NYU Metro Center, and Yebo Yebo Communications, among others, will also all display multimedia work. More info at www.june16.org.

The gallery will be open from 11 am to 7 pm each day with special events some evenings. The opening on Sept 12, at 7 PM features South African wine donated by the RSA Consulate, and other surprises.

JUNE16 is a community of more than three-dozen organizations creating public awareness of Youth Day as a call to action throughout the year. Youth Day is a commemoration of the Soweto Uprising of 1976, when over 20,000 young people took to the streets of Soweto, a township outside Joburg, to protest the apartheid policy of inferior education for blacks. This year JUNE16 held its first Youth Day rally in Crotona Park, the Bronx. This exhibition represents the next step in the long-term project.
