Brave New World (Dec.27 - 31, 2004) "Brave New World", Aldous Huxley's grand vision of the future was staged at 217 in a workshop version of an upcoming Broadway rock musical, with score by Jonnie Rockwell and book by Alexander Marshall and Steven Tresker.

A Black Christmas Carol and The Sun King at 217 (Dec.22, 2004) Titus Walker directs the Ujamaa Black Theater in conjunction with The Children's Theater in 217 for two shows, "A Black Christmas Carol" and "The Sun King.

Deconstructed Xmas at 217 Window (Dec.21 - 22, 2004) Darryl Hell, chashama Technical Director, associate of s6k Entertainment, and the only experimental/industrial turntablist in NYC, exhibited a 50-minute portion of an event produced by Christian Marclay @ The New Museum, NYC, entitled, "The Sounds of Christmas". For this installation the excerpt was intercut with additional footage. The video was remixed but the performance audio was unaltered and live.

Alana McNair's 'In Spite of Appearance' (Dec.17 - 19, 2004) Alana McNair's sound/art installation explored the relationship between the five senses. Inspired by a kooky and whimsical sound installation, this piece told a story in which each sense is personified and explored the complexity of human personality and its self-conscious limitations.

The Nutcracker at the 217 Window (Dec.16, 2004) Happy Hour performed their 7-minute version of the Nutcracker at the 217 venue. Matt Morgan played Clara, Mark Gindick played the Nutcracker and Ambrose Martos played everyone else. Free.

FoHRP Photo Program at 217 Gallery (Dec.16, 2004 - Jan.17, 2005) Friends of Hudson River Park's Photo Program is an eight-week course taught by Curtis Willocks of the Fashion Institute of Technology, and is conducted three times a year for teenage students interested in photography. The pictures exhibited at 217 were an accumulation of all sessions to date.

Maureen Towey's "CROWD" (Dec.13 - 16, 2004) Twenty people jammed in a storefront give rush hour commuters a magnified reflection of what it means to be an individual amongst the masses. Inspired by children's choirs, military formations, prayer sequences, urban sidewalks, and fans at European soccer games. Directed by Maureen Towey and featuring a street musician, a tiny puppet stage, and a crowd of actors and dancers in all shapes and sizes. Onlookers can come and go as they please.

Performed as part of the Not For Sale series featuring eight imaginative performance installations presented from November 3, 2004 through Dec 19, 2004 in the storefront window of chashama at 208 W.37th St.

I.E.- "In Other Words" (Dec.13 - 15, 2004) I.E.- "In Other Words" is an original full-length play written by FRTC Artistic Director Mark Greenfield, using the time-honored Horatio Alger inspired tale of a poor country boy making it big in the Big City. This is the third in a three-evening series of staged readings by the Faux-Real Theatre Company and the culminating event of their residency at 40 Worth Street.

Open Studios at 40 Worth St. (Dec.11, 2004) After several months of being a part of the chashama artists-in-residence program, Kristin Anderson, Dominic Albo, Peter Bill, Kendall Bradford, Sarah Brenneman, Maria Cataldo, Head Clausnitzer, David Dalessandro, Emily C. DeCola, Yukari Edamitsu, Elia Gurna, Clay Hapaz, Rebecca Hazard, Janusz Jaworski, Ryan Kitson, Michelle Kurlan, Jose Landoni, Danny Licul, Daphane Park, Avani Patel, Antonio Puri, Dean Radinovsky, Scrapworm, Amy Sinclair, Mark Stone, Sydney Maresca, Mark Wiener, and Yoichiro Yoda held an open studio and exhibition to commemorate the exciting opportunity they were afforded.
Resolve @ 40 Worth was the culmination and expression of the artistic voices that have emerged from this program.

chashama Fall Benefit 2004 (November 15, 2004) chashama's Fall fundraiser at Osteria Stella, 135 W.50th Street, features dinner, cocktails, ambient performances by local artists Julie Atlas Muz, Happy Hour, Eric Davis: the Red Bastard, Claire Barratt's Sculptural Movement Installation, Javier Cabrera and hairstyling by choreographer Edisa Weeks plus a silent auction and raffle of artwork by chashama artists-in-residence.

Billy Joel (November 8 - 12, 2004) Daily at 6p, Michael Portnoy presents Billy Joel, the second in the Not for Sale window series at 208, accompanied by The Three Trombones (Marisa Terris, Yaaku Tharaka, and Jason Braunstein). Michael Portnoy (aka XAR) is a New York based multimedia artist, performer, musician, and director of behavior. He has presented work extensively in NY in such venues as: P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, The Kitchen, P.S.122,The Judson Church, White Box, Canada Gallery, ACE Gallery, The Knitting Factory, chashama, Little Theater, The Grammy Awards at Radio City Music Hall,As Four fashion shows and the washroom at Schiller's; and internationally in such venues as Foksal Gallery Foundation (Warsaw), Kaaitheater (Brussels) and The National Review of Live Art (Glasgow). He has just opened Session, a new social space in Tribeca devoted to the exploration of social exchange as an art form.

Titus X (November 5 - 22, 2004) Producers Joe DeFeo and Braden Chapman stage the New York premier of Titus X, written by Shawn Northrip, and directed by Peter Sanfilippo at 217 E.42nd Street.
Northrip, who received his M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from Tisch, decided to set a Shakespeare play to the music from the DC underground. Titus seemed the perfect choice because it contained the perfect balance of politics and unapologetic violence. This tragic-comedy, which is as much concert as it is theatrical show, follows the plot of Shakespeare's original revenge play, while reveling in its own absurdity.
Titus X has been developed at the Kennedy Center 2002 Page to Stage Festival, at Catholic University, at the 23rd Annual Washington New Play Festival, and performed in production at Source Theatre in Washington, DC.

Window Looming (November 3 - 6, 2004) "Window Looming" debuts chashama's window performance series, Not For Sale, a series running at our newest venue, 208 West 37th Street (between Seventh and Eighth Avenues) from November 3rd through December 19th, 2004.
A rotating cast of two dancer/artists create and disassemble a large fabric structure in alternating performances daily. Using various materials discarded and donated by Garment District businesses, they enact the tale of Odysseus' wife Penelope, who, long awaiting his return from the Trojan War, announced she would re-marry when the funeral canopy of Laertes was complete. Secretly, she had no intention of finishing her work, and so what she wove during the day, she unraveled by night.
After an indoor-only viewing of the work, an artist reception with silent auction was held on Saturday at 7-10 p.m. to benefit RETTOCAMME, including original artworks by Emma Cotter, Rob Fournier, Roy Germon, Ron Gott, Nicole Schulman and Michael Reck.

Collaboration I (November 1 - 7, 2004) The 2nd half of an exchange program between C.A.N. (formerly Creative Artists Network, now CFEVA, the Center For Emerging Visual Artists - www.cfeva.org) of Philadelphia and chashama takes place at C.A.N. in Philadelphia with an exhibition of chashama's artists. Reception at C.A.N. on Saturday, November 6th from 6-9pm.

"Mary and the Therapist" and "EMERGE" (October 26 - 31, 2004) This Woman's Work Theatre Co.'s stages "Mary and the Therapist", a black comedy about the relationship between a patient and therapist and their struggle over life goals and personal power, written by New York City playwright Emily Conbere. Simultaneously presented by TWWTC: "EMERGE", a mixed media art show of works by emerging visual artists.

Jordan Fuchs Dance Company (October 22, 2004) Choreography of Jordan Fuchs in the window of 217.

Days of Wine and Roses (October 16 - 17, 2004) The Chad Foundation for Athletes Artists stages benefit performances of the play by JP Miller with an after-party at 217 E.42nd Street.
Directed by Tony Macy-Perez and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., with players *Arista Erik, Colin Smith, Jon Furey, Joan Farda, Jackson Ming, Patrick Kleeman and Shannyn Kleeman.

Collaboration I (October 6 - 21, 2004) chashama hosts a group show by Creative Artists Network of Philadelphia at 217 E.42nd Street, with a reception on the 8th. This is the first half of an arts exchange program with chashama artists-in-residence to exhibit in Philadelphia in November.

5 by 5: New Performance for the Window (September 27 - October 1, 2004) Another international festival of performance organized by Dan McKereghan for the 217 window. Featuring Jessica Buege, Dan, Peter Grzybowski, Natalie Loveless and Jamie McMurry. Reception on Oct.1.

"Sisters under the Rainbow" & "Passin' " (September 26, 2004) Two original works performed twice each by the Afrikan Women's Repertory Co., for their fundraiser at 217 E.42nd Street.

sadomasochism, the electric chair and other forms of torture (September 18 - 20, 2004) Laura Grillo mounts a performance installation themed to the death penalty in the United States in the 217 window.

Flower Power (September 14-15, 2004) Rafael Sanchez uses 10 bags of flour and a soundtrack of music from the 60s and 70s to question whether the ideas of peace we romanticized during the 20th century are applicable in today's political climate. In the 217 display window.

I Luv NY (September 13 & 16, 2004) Rafael Sanchez uses 100 I 'Heart' NY bags and a soundtrack of songs about cities for "I Luv NY" to comment on the chaos and suffocation that can become symptoms of living in NYC. In the 217 display window.

I Still Luv H.E.R. (September 9 - 11, 2004) The family is a metaphor for the journey of Hip Hop culture in "I Still Luv H.E.R.", presented as a benefit/fundraiser reading that examines the current state of Hip Hop culture today. Cast and written by Creating Our Evolution Youth Performance Group, a collection of New York City students supervised by Askia Egashira, a teacher from California. At 217.

Paintings (September 7 - 24, 2004) The works of Jeffrey Belpanno are on exhibit at 217, with a daytime reception September 21.

Rappacini's Daughter (September 4, 2004) The Octopus Ensemble, including chashama artist-in-residence Emily DeCola, stages a puppet version of the Nathaniel Hawthorne tale, performed twice at 217 E.42nd Street.

Divided Portraits (August 28 - September 2, 2004) A series of oil-on-canvas diptychs by Hilary Cooper which explore disability and identity, in conjunction with the Imagine 04 Festival. Opening reception, August 28. Attendance 440.

The Imagine04 Festival (August 28 - September 2, 2004) The Imagine04 Festival at 217 E.42nd Street featured several themes through a wide variety of performances, forums, and exhibits, such as Hilary Cooper's series of oil-on-canvas diptychs, which explore disability and identity, and performances of autobiographical stories by the members of Visible Theatre, many of whom have physical disabilities.

The War Room & The Peace Piece (August 28 - September 30, 2004) An installation (currently ongoing) of four painted walls by William Ayton features poignant images themed to the effects of war at 208 W.37th Street. In 208's window, The Peace Piece, a multi-component art project originally conceived by Adelle Lutz with sound and video installation by Courtney Harmel & Sara Driver offers passersby a peace meditation. Both projects are part of the Imagine 04 Festival of Arts, Issues and Ideas. A reception was held on August 26, 6-9p.

Stone and Stone (August 17 - 18, 2004) An evening of Stand-Up Comedy and Cabaret by brothers Aaron and Todd Stone at 217 E.42nd Street.

Waverly Place (August 12 - 14, 2004) Presented as a fundraiser for the HIV outreach program of The Law and Policy Group, Inc. Starring Tradon Turner, written by Gloria J. Brown and directed by David Sheppard at 217. A matinee and two window performances were added. Attendance 160.

American Plays (August 5 - 7, 2004) The last in the free chashama-BAM LDC outdoor presentations at BAM Park features The Suitcase Players as they perform bitesize versions of Death of a Salesman, Long Day's Journey into Night, and The Glass Menagerie as part homage, part parody of great American playwrights. Attendance 145.

Love's Labours Lost (July 28 - August 1, 2004) Shakespeare's play is the third in the free "Outside Art" series at BAM Park, presented jointly by chashama and BAM LDC, and performed by Pilot House, The Theatre Company. Attendance 265.

Dreamscape: Where Womb Powers Supersede (July 23 - 25, 2004) The next chashama-BAM LDC free presentation in BAM Park is a dreamlike futuristic fantasy told through comedy, gesture, dance, song and text by Christalyn Wright and Co. Attendance 150.

OASIS 2004 (July 19 - 23, 2004) chashama's annual festival of free performance takes place at 217 E.42nd Street with a focus on dance featuring 19 acts over a five-day rotating schedule.

40 Worth OPEN HOUSE (July 16 - 18, 2004) chashama artists-in-residence on the 14th floor of 40 Worth Street (donated by Jeffrey Gural) are featured in an open house organized by Special Projects Director and chashama's chief Artist-In-Residence Janusz Jaworski.

An exhibition of paintings (July 12 - 29, 2004) Zoran Crnkovic exhibits selections of his visual works at 217 E.42nd Street, with a reception held on July 28.

RULES (June 28, 2004) A new play by Louisa Benton and directed by Matt Opatrny for Blessed Unrest at 217 E.42nd Street.

Freedom of Assembly: All Together Now (June 25, 2004) Hosted by Sophia Skiles and Noel Salzman, the June edition of THAW's June Freedom Follies at 217 E.42nd Street expands on the issue of free speech and assembly with a focus on the history of social and political protest in NYC, as well as the lessons from effective mass demonstrations throughout the world.

consciousness (June 21 - July 5, 2004) An installation by multimedia artist and sculptor Takashio Hisayasu in 217 E.42nd Street, including his movement-sculpture piece, "Human Clay", in association with Clare Barrett's "Ciila_Vee Movement Projects" June 21-25.

"Cilla_Vee Movement Projects" MOTION SCULPTURE MOVEMENT INSTALLATIONS (June 21-25, 2004) "Cilla_Vee Movement Projects" director Claire Elizabeth Barratt presents five days of living human "sculpture" pieces existing as part of a specific, created environment in the windows of 217 E.42nd St. Opening reception "Elegant Venture Cocktail Installation" on Monday, June 21st. features opera singer Ellen Wolf.

Haunted: a work-in-progress (June 2, 2004) An adaptation/deconstruction of William Shakespeare's Hamlet by the Chaos Group Theater at 217 W.42nd Street.

"Corporate Practice: Junior Executive Training" (May 26-June 1, 2004) According to creator Diana Arce: "In the spirit of corporate corruption, this performance is a response to the recent corporate scandals of Enron, WorldCom, and even Martha Stewart and the office workers that made their scandals possible. Two Office Workers (in wolf masks) undertake the large task of destroying documents and get swamped by their efforts." -And the 217 window gets filled by refuse from a paper-shredder!

Noah Peepkin - A Small Adventure (May 24, 2004 - Feb.3, 2005) An exhibit by Jeremy Bullis of his clay-chicken installation on the 3rd floor of the Food Court at 234 W.42nd Street.

[re]:collection (May 22, 2004) "[re]:collection, documenting memory and remembering - lest we forget" was presented by Seawall Productions as a one-day event featuring film, visual art, and video by three women artists: SADAA E ZAN (Voices of Women), Renée Bergan's award-winning debut film, Paintings and Sculpture by Alison Ming Korte of Hunter College, and "Sleep", a 15-minute video installation by UK based Italian artist Emilia Telese.

Currency 2004 (Mar.18-20, 2004) Dan McKereghan inaugurates chashama's new space at 217 E.42nd Street with a second installment of his international series.

The Happening (Feb. 25 - 29) chashama's last event at 135 features installations and performances in spaces on all three floors previously occupied by artists and staff, plus passersby are invited in to decorate the space as they see fit with paints from chashama's inventory.

A Happenin' Thing (Feb. 25 - 28) Dan McKereghan's final appearance at 135 is another endurance installation relating to the pan-cultural phenomenon of "happenings" for 80 hours in the windows of 135.

Joint exhibit (Feb.24 - March 8, 2004) Joey Havlock returns with three other artists including Sir Shadow for a joint exhibit in the final show at 121 W.42nd Street.

Secret Confession Box (Feb.21 - 24) Laura Barnett returns for another posting of people's secrets (written anonymously) on the windows of 135.

"The Art of Falling" (Feb 16 - 20) Catherine Hourihan and Tilt Performance Co perform in the windows of 135 with visuals by Pam Kray.

Send A Salami To Your Boy In The Army (January 18-31, 2004) Vennila Kain's "living art installation" is a meditation on the war in Iraq and includes an altar where she sits for an hour of mourning and reflection each day in the display windows of 135 W.42nd Street.

The Weight of the Media, The Burden of Reality (Dec.27, 2003 - January 2, 2004) An installation of South African newspaper promo posters with daily performances by artist Steve Cohen, in the display windows of 135.
