Inyoung Seoung and Minny Lee, the artists of I&M Collective, will use the exhibition space as a vessel for the public to create art. Through Impulse both the artists and the public will act, react, and participate in drawing, photography and discussion. The exhibition comprises three components: Seoung’s line drawings of trees; Lee’s videos which were made in Halsnøy Island, Norway; and public participation in a drawing workshop and a photo relay. The idea is to create a contact point between the artists and the public so the exhibition will be a continuous process that will grow and alter, as opposed to a venue showcasing finished works.

From April 9th until the opening reception on April 19th, Seoung will draw trees on the wall and the window, spontaneously without base drawings, relying on her intuition. The core of her work is the process itself — the daily progression of drawings that the public is invited to observe. At the end of the exhibition opening, the public will be invited to de-install the wall drawings.

Lee’s video, Strand will be projected onto a wall. The video was produced while Lee was an artist-in-residence at the Monastery of Halsnøy in Norway. Lee knits throughout the video in and around the Monastery. Slight changes in the length of the muffler indicate the passage of time, draws people into the domestic space of a woman, raising questions about identity.

During the opening, the public will be invited to participate in a drawing workshop and a photo relay. Seoung will ask people to draw on one side and write their names on the other side of a sheet of paper. These drawings will be displayed on the window overlapping with Seoung’s drawings, their names facing the street. Using a Polaroid camera as a quick and easy way to connect with the public, Lee will lead the photo relay that renders participants both photographers and subject matters of their photos. The resulting photographs will be displayed immediately as part of the exhibition.

Inyoung Seoung, a resident of New Jersey, holds a BFA in Sculpture from Hong-Ik University in Seoul, South Korea. While in college, she was inspired by Joseph Beuys which led her to continue working with installation and public arts for interaction with the audience. She has had solo shows at the Greenpoint Gallery, Space Womb, and the Fountain Art fair; group shows at Queens College, Gallery Korea, Monmouth Museum, Asia Society Museum among other venues.

Minny Lee is a 2008 graduate of the International Center of Photography’s one-year certificate program. In 2009-2011, Lee was selected to attend the Reflexions Masterclass in Europe, a two-year seminar led by Giorgia Fiorio and Gabriel Bauret. Lee’s thematic interest is exploring nature and her relationship to time and space. Lee’s photographs were exhibited at Les Rencontres d’Arles Photography Festival, The Center for Fine Art Photography, and Mois de la Photo à Paris among other venues. Lee has resided in the tri-state New York area since 1992.
