The work in Better Homes and Gardens reflects on the suburban landscape of Jason Lee's childhood. The constructed environment mimics elements and color schemes of the skateboard pseudo-culture that was sold to the rabid youth of the 1980s by pop media. This pristine wonderland of suburbia did not reflect his experience or the real underground suburban punk rock that was growing right under it’s nose.
About the Artist
Jason Lee is currently an Associate Professor of Sculpture and Foundations Coordinator at the School of Art and Design at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. Lee spent the 80s skateboarding the desolate streets of Akron and going to all-ages shows at the infamous JB’s Down in Kent, Ohio. Through the late 80s and early 90s, he became a part of the vibrant local music scene, making flyers, organizing house shows for out of town bands, and as a general purveyor of chaos. Lee’s current body of work reflects upon these formative experiences and manifests them in carefully crafted, multimedia constructions. Lee was born in 1969 in Goldsboro, NC. He received his BFA from Kent State University in 1993 and his MFA from University of Wisconsin Madison in 1998.
