NOUNS: Heart, Mind and Soul consists of current and past works, chronologically spanning four decades. The older works, consisting mostly of portraits, are included to show the consistence of vision that exists in the body of work as a whole. Hugh sullivan has been painting for 50 years. His works are in major international collections from Denmark to Mexico, as well as throughout the United States. His paintings are a response to his environment, which he sees writ large and small. From insects to galaxies, to "people, places and things" nothing escapes his brush. These are emotional paintings. Bold colors and sometimes brutal brush work give them a vitality all their own. The struggle to control the image, without subjugating it -- which is apparent in many of the works -- is an endearing quality. However there is a dark side to the work. An absence of people in the cityscapes, the confrontational aspect of the portraits, and the solitude of trees, gives one pause.
