Time As Color
Myke Karlowski

Time As Color is an exhibition of oil paintings by Myke Karlowski, drawing from a three-year body of work that investigates his experiences of time-space synesthesia.

Time-space synesthesia is a cognitive phenomenon that associates units of time with specific colors, color combinations, and their position in space. Karlowski’s palette for the work in this exhibition draws upon these associations, each color representing a unit or duration of time. The process is both investigative and introspective. Layers of paint act like entries in a journal, documenting the events of each day as simplified color blocks and transitions. The paintings are further exposed to time through accumulation and erosion. Before a new entry is applied, the previous layer is wiped out, sanded, or scraped away. The result is an artifact which conveys the history of its own development and contains a narrative of lived moments and experiences present in its color.

Past exhibitions have included the annual Art of the Northeast Exhibition at Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, CT, and the 40th Annual Juried Art Exhibition at the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft, NJ. Recently, Myke’s work was included in the group exhibition Artfirst at Novado Gallery in Jersey City. Time As Color, at Chashama’s Space to Present in Matawan, is the first solo exhibition of oil paintings from his recent, introspective body of work investigating time-space synesthesia.
