Sequins of Spirits
Presented by the Sosyete Kanari

This exquisite, individualistic art is from Haiti. Each flag (images in sequins and/or beads) is delicately worked on by hand, taking much time and great skill. These images, called veve, from the Voudou Religion are ritual designs and represent the Voudou gods or "lwa", spirit-like entities that come down, enter the bodies of the hosts and interact on a very practical and human level with the people. Whether these flags represent "Legba" (spirit who opens the gates for all who are welcome), "Marassa" (spirit of twins), "Gran Bois" (spirit of the forest), "Erzulie" (Goddess of love), or "Ague" (spirit of the water), they bring forth a deeper connection between the person and the spirit, assisting the person according to their particular need.

The sequins bottles also represent the lwa, beautifully designed and colored. The leather masks are uniquely Haitian. Each region of Haiti holds a mask of a different design and meaning, and each mask is more beautiful then the next.
