About OASIS
OASIS is an 11 year-old annual festival of free performance which provides opportunities for established and emerging artists to showcase their work to audiences who might not otherwise be exposed to art in a casual setting in midtown.

chashama is offering the window venue at 217 East 42nd Street for up to forty (40) emerging dance companies/choreographers to present one or more original works to total not more than 20 minutes in length per performance. Groups/artists will be assigned three (3) performances in the Monday-Friday period of July 16 - 27, to take place at lunchtime (12PM-1PM) and/or rush hour (5:30PM-6:30PM), when there is the most potential to draw in audiences from pedestrian traffic.

chashama will offer each group/individual artist a stipend and 1 hour of free rehearsal space at our performance venue at 217.

About the Venue
At 217 East 42nd Street, OASIS has been programmed as a Window Performance event for the 217 storefront display window. Performances take place indoors on a theater stage adjacent to the window at street level, allowing performances to be viewed from the street and from within the theater simultaneously. A given performance may also take place, in part, outdoors on the sidewalk around the venue.

This means that performers on the window stage are performing for TWO audience fronts: one is to the street through the window, and the other is INDOOR, in the theatrical seating area. These audiences are 180 degrees apart. It is important to understand that performances will be seen front-and-back simultaneously, in order to stage it to best advantage under these circumstances.

Passers-by can look into the window and see both performers and audience, while the audience can see both performers and passers-by. Passers-by can go in and become part of the audience, and members of the audience can step outside and watch the performance from the sidewalk.

Performers in OASIS should also take into account that people are encouraged to enter and exit the theater as they like, or view the performance from where they like. It's not a single-focus event like church or Carnegie Hall.

About Site Specific Sundays
chashama, in association with Summer on the Hudson @ Riverside Park South, is presenting Site Specific Sundays at Red Shade Plaza as part of our summer festival of free performances. Four companies or individual artists will be selected to create site-specific outdoor performance. Each company or artist will be assigned one of the following four Sundays in July: 8, 15, 22, and 29. Performances will take place at 3PM and 5PM.

Performances should be created specific to this location for an audience comprised of a diverse age-group. We strongly advise that you visit the park before submitting an application. We encourage you to devise a theme for your work based on the geography of the area or something more abstract, as long as the piece you propose was made to be performed at Red Shade Plaza and not somewhere else. Pieces should be no shorter than 20 minutes and no longer than 60 minutes.

chashama will offer each group/individual artist a stipend, assistance with press and promotional materials and 5 hours of free rehearsal space.

Please be advised: chashama's rehearsal venues to do not have sprung floors or marlee. Further, chashama's rehearsal spaces are converted raw spaces; floors are often made of cement, and three-phase power is not usually available.

About Summer on the Hudson @Riverside Park South
Summer on the Hudson is a free summer-long arts festival that presents a diverse mix of music concerts, dance performances, movies under the stars, DJ dance parties, family programs, special events, and wellness activities.

All events take place in Riverside Park South, New York's newest Hudson River waterfront park located on the Upper West Side.

Red Shade Plaza is in Riverside Park South, along the Hudson River at approximately 62nd Street, but you can't get to it directly from 62nd Street. The nearest entry to the park is at 59th Street. From there, go north (uptown) about the equivalent of three blocks. (There is also an entrance to the park at 72nd Street, in which case you would go south about ten blocks.) The playing space is comprised of a large sloping lawn that extends to an industrial-looking pavilion constructed of wood and red metal. Both of these spaces overlook the Hudson River to the West and Riverside Drive to the North.
