chashama’s Workspace program, the largest artist studio residency in New York City, provides subsidized studio space to 126 New York City based artists. The Workspace program evolved from chashama’s original, central mission of giving space to create to New York City-based artists. Studios range in size from under 200 square feet to over 400 square feet, and are rented to participating artists at up to 90% below market rates. In 2007 chashama expanded into long-term studio hubs in Harlem and the Brooklyn Army Terminal, in Sunset Park, which together with six smaller complexes in Jamaica, Ridgewood, and Far Rockaway, Queens, and Midtown Manhattan comprise the 126 individual studio spaces.
chashama’s studio hubs contain exhibition and common spaces, small kitchen areas, and space for light construction work. In addition to affordable studio space, Workspace supports artists in all aspects of their creative and professional development through exhibition opportunities, annual open studios events, a visiting curators program, an online registry, professional development workshops, and access to Materials for the Arts.
Since 2005, chashama North is a residency program for artists and writers located on a 5-acre estate in Pine Plains, New York. Combining live-in studios with private workspaces, shared gallery areas, a communal kitchen, an ‘organic internship’ with McEnroe Farms , fresh foods, family-style dinners and a serene setting, chaNorth encourages a sense of community through a dialogue of art and life as one. With backgrounds in a wide-range of mediums, seven artists live and create during their one-month session, and present work in an Open Studio event from June-October each year.
Residents are asked to contribute a few hours per week working at a local organic farm, allowing artists the opportunity to interact with the environment, the community and agricultural history of the Hudson Valley.
In a partnership with the NYC Economic Development Corporation, chashama provides 93 visual artist studios in two buildings, BAT-A & BAT-B, within the stunning, historic Brooklyn Army Terminal.
