Programs

Our Workspace Program

chashama’s Workspace program, the largest artist studio residency in New York City, provides subsidized studio space to 126 New York City based artists. The Workspace program evolved from chashama’s original, central mission of giving space to create to New York City-based artists. Studios range in size from under 200 square feet to over 400 square feet, and are rented to participating artists at up to 90% below market rates. In 2007 chashama expanded into long-term studio hubs in Harlem and the Brooklyn Army Terminal, in Sunset Park, which together with six smaller complexes in Jamaica, Ridgewood, and Far Rockaway, Queens, and Midtown Manhattan comprise the 126 individual studio spaces.

chashama’s studio hubs contain exhibition and common spaces, small kitchen areas, and space for light construction work. In addition to affordable studio space, Workspace supports artists in all aspects of their creative and professional development through exhibition opportunities, annual open studios events, a visiting curators program, an online registry, professional development workshops, and access to Materials for the Arts.

chashama North
Pine Plains

chashama North

Description

Since 2005, chashama North is a residency program for artists and writers located on a 5-acre estate in Pine Plains, New York. Combining live-in studios with private workspaces, shared gallery areas, a communal kitchen, an ‘organic internship’ with McEnroe Farms , fresh foods, family-style dinners and a serene setting, chaNorth encourages a sense of community through a dialogue of art and life as one. With backgrounds in a wide-range of mediums, seven artists live and create during their one-month session, and present work in an Open Studio event from June-October each year.

Residents are asked to contribute a few hours per week working at a local organic farm, allowing artists the opportunity to interact with the environment, the community and agricultural history of the Hudson Valley.

Facilities
Set on five acres with a sprawling meadow, adjacent to hundreds of acres of undeveloped woods, chashama North consists of two structures, Spruce House and the Bungalows. Spruce House is a historic farmhouse with two bedrooms and five studios. The Bungalows are three adjoining apartments that house the communal kitchen and lounge, five bedrooms and two studio spaces.

Each artist is given a private bedroom with private or shared bathrooms.

The studios are semi-private and have one or two tables, and a few other artists' supplies.

Communal lounge and kitchen, stocked with delicious, whole foods.

2-4 kitchen spaces for artist experiments or food-related installations.

Communal computer for emailing. Wireless network in Spruce House.

Beautiful lake for swimming and hiking trails a mile down the road.

Residency Information:
Residencies are four weeks and culminate in an Open Studio event.

Artists are free to set their own daily schedule and activities.

Artists must coordinate their own transportation to and from the residency.

A communal bicycle is available.

One day per week, chaNorth residents will contribute 4 hours at McEnroe Farm, an opportunity to gain a deeper connection with our food, learn about organic farming practices, and enjoy the Hudson Valley sunshine.

There is one shared meal per day, the kitchen is stocked so individual meals and snacks can be prepared as needed. (Primarily vegetarian, meals may include organic and naturally raised meats two to three times a week).
