chashama Project Exhibition Studio^
NOTE: chashama is not accepting applications for this program at this time. Those interested should check back for future application deadlines.
Program Information
The Projects Exhibition Studio program is a hybrid concept: part exhibition program, part visual artist's studio. It is designed to give artists space to create and space to exhibit. The current Project Studios are located at the Northeast corner of 119th street and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. The spaces have floor to ceiling storefront windows, excellent light, hardwood floors and private closets and bathrooms. They are roughly 250 square feet (about 13' x 20').
We are looking for artists interested in creating site specific instillations or performances that engage the community and take full advantage of these vacant storefronts.
This program is subsidized as part of chashama's AREA (Accessing Real Estate for the Arts) program. The Project Studio term will be one month. There is a fully-refundable security deposit of $100.00, and a mandatory public viewing the last Friday and Saturday of each month. Open hours must be 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm. As a hybrid program, the Project Studios program will be administered the Performing Arts Programming Director and the Visual Arts Programming Director.
The Application Process
Applications are open to visual and multi-disciplinary artists living in any of the five boroughs of New York City or the surrounding counties.
The program will begin February 1st. Projects are selected based upon the clarity of the project proposal, artistic merit, and project feasibility.
Applications will be kept on file for 12 months in case space becomes available.
An artist may propose more than one project. Each project must have its own unique application - including support materials.

Windows Program^
Through the Windows Program, chashama helps build a broader audience for contemporary art and performance through multi-disciplinary performances and visual installations in vacant storefront windows. The program creates an ideal situation for artists to further develop new and old work in a flexible environment. Performances and installations may be interactive, allowing audience members to creatively contribute to work made in unexpected public places, and form a relationship with chashama artists.
Currently we are accepting applications for our window performance stage at 266 West 37th Street. This window space is located on a highly visible Garment District block, and it is fully equipped with theatrical sound and lighting. chashama supports emerging and underrepresented artists by providing one of the most elusive commodities in New York City: space to create. chashama works with landlords and developers to identify underutilized real estate which the owner is willing to donate on a short-term, temporary basis, preferring to see underutilized spaces put to good use, looked after and maintained while they are awaiting commercial tenants.
After converting these spaces into temporary theaters, galleries, artist studios and rehearsal spaces, we invite artists to use them for free or at highly subsidized rates. Through our efforts, artists are better able to live and create their work in New York City.
Over our ten year history, chashama has worked with many real estate owners, including The Durst Organization, Newmark & Company, Forest City Ratner, George Comfort & Sons, Brause Realty, C & K Properties and HEC Real Estate.
chashama is committed to a policy of equal opportunity in all its activities and programs, including employment. chashama does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, national origin, citizenship status, political affiliation, socioeconomic status or religious belief.
