chashama Outdoors
By partnering with community organizations and neighborhood development groups, chashama produces outside art festivals throughout the New York City area. In 2009 on Saturday, September 12, 12noon-3p, chashama, the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation and the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning again brought the Dance Jamaica! festival to JPAC at 153-10 Jamaica Avenue, in Jamaica, Queens. Three companies and/or individual artists were each selected to create one 45-minute site-specific piece for the festival.
Windows ^
Applications accepted on an ongoing basis – but don't delay, spaces fill up quickly!
*NEW* Subject to availability, chashama is now offering a $50/week rental of a Sprint wireless broadband router (with $50 deposit).
The Windows Program is a hallmark public art initiative of chashama, enlivening vacant storefronts with multi-disciplinary performances and visual installations. The program offers art in unexpected public places, and aims to build a broader audience for contemporary art and performance.
For artist applicants, the possibilities are endless. In the past we've supported tableaux vivants, Butoh performances, radio plays, films and video displays, puppetry, photography, graffiti art – we're open to whatever your mind can dream up! Artists have found this to be an ideal situation to further develop both new and old work, as they gain immediate feedback from a wide range of viewers.
The Windows Program has two points of entry: by curated rental or via Windows Awards, and a competitive award process. Rentals are by the week or month and are offered at affordable, subsidized rates. (currently between $250 - $1000 a week). Windows Awards offers free space, and marketing, technical and administrative support, and may include a small stipend. All Windows Program projects are chosen based upon feasibility, venue limitations, and artistic/experimental vision.
Though not a necessity, we have a preference for work that actively engages the passerby.
Note: It is recommended that you make site visits to these window spaces to see which space would be the best for your project before submitting an application.

chashama supports emerging and underrepresented artists by providing one of the most elusive commodities in New York City: space to create. chashama works with landlords and developers to identify underutilized real estate which the owner is willing to donate on a short-term, temporary basis, preferring to see underutilized spaces put to good use, looked after and maintained while they are awaiting commercial tenants.
After converting these spaces into temporary theaters, galleries, artist studios and rehearsal spaces, we invite artists to use them for free or at highly subsidized rates. Through our efforts, artists are better able to live and create their work in New York City.
Over our ten year history, chashama has worked with many real estate owners, including The Durst Organization, Newmark & Company, Forest City Ratner, George Comfort & Sons, Brause Realty, C & K Properties and HEC Real Estate.
chashama is committed to a policy of equal opportunity in all its activities and programs, including employment. chashama does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, national origin, citizenship status, political affiliation, socioeconomic status or religious belief.
