chaNorth Residency

chaNorth is currently accepting applications for Spring and Summer Sessions, 2018.

chaNorth is a New York State artist residency aimed at providing a nourishing, focused environment for emerging and established artists as they continue their committed practices. chaNorth accepts applications in all creative fields, including but is not limited to visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition, and performance. The program offers an opportunity for 5-7 artists to remove themselves from the typical demands of daily life and immerse themselves in a creative live/work space for four weeks. Resident artists will be provided with a private furnished bedroom and semi-furnished studio. chaNorth is located on five acres of sprawling meadow, adjacent to hundreds of acres of undeveloped woods in the scenic Hudson Valley. The residency fosters a culture of both serious artistic production and plays with a strong focus on healthy communal living. Shared kitchens are stocked with fresh, local, organic produce and whole grains. Cooperatively prepared meals act as the anchor of the program. In addition, residents are asked to contribute 3 hours per week working at McEnroe Organic Farm, allowing artists the opportunity to interact with the environment, the community and agricultural history of the Hudson Valley. With the exception of farm shift and weekly potlucks, this program is intended for residents to have undisrupted time to focus on their continued studio practice. Some programming is suggested but participation is always optional.

chaNorth residency offers artists multiple opportunities to introduce, share work and network.

  • *Fellowship award, we award one merit-based fellowship for a young artist, age under 30, for the summer residency session.
  • *Solo show award, Chashama exhibition space, New York city - awarded to one artist from current year (2018) resident artists.
  • *Selected group show, Chashama exhibition space, New York city - selected from an open call from current year (2018) resident artists.

*Studio visits 2-3 times per session from curators, critics, gallerists, residency directors from NY and other art professionals.
  • *Each session culminates in an Open Studio event that is open to the general public.

Studios: Each resident will have 24-hour access to studios that range in size (estimated around 200+ square feet). Each studio is unique and has varying amounts of wall space and windows. Studio assignments are based on medium and projects proposed. chaNorth is located on a 5-acre homestead property and therefore offers ample outdoor space to host performances, installations and sculpture park. Please note that this is a historic property, therefore, all possible impacts of the proposed project must be considered before approval. Residents are responsible for restoring the property to its found condition.

Living: Each resident will be assigned a private bedroom with linens. They will have access to either a private or shared bathroom. There are two shared kitchens, a living room and a patio available for communal use. All residents should be conscious of cleanliness and courtesy in these spaces. Onsite laundry is available free of charge for resident use.

Communal Food and Farm Shift: A significant part of the chaNorth community is based on shared meals and gardening. The kitchens will be stocked with organic produce from McEnroe Farm along with whole foods such as grains and nuts. Meals are primarily vegetarian but include naturally raised meats 2-3 times a week. Although residents will largely operate their schedules independently, residents are encouraged attending the twice a week potluck dinners. Each week residents participate in a 3 hr farm shift at McEnroe’s Education Garden. chaNorth strongly feels that participating in both aspects of farming and meal preparation allows for a stronger understanding of individual and communal living. Please mention in your application any dietary or physical limitations which may impact these activities.

Transportation: The chaNorth Residency is located in outside of Pine Plains, NY. The Wassaic Metro North Station and Rhinecliffe Hudson Amtrak are the closest train stations. Transportation, pick up and drop off, will be provided to one of the train stations on the first and last day of the residency session for artists without a car. The Hudson Valley has a lot of hiking, swimming, arts festivals, and museums, therefore, residents are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to bring a car for recreational and transportation use.

Applicants:  chaNorth accepts applications in all creative fields, including but is not limited to visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition, and performance.

Artists will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability function well in a small community.  Along with having a strong commitment to their artistic practices, it is important that the applicants demonstrate an interest in communal meals and farm participation.

Fees: Each session fee is $950 plus a fully refundable $200 deposit. Although the program is partially subsidized, the fee includes providing food for the residents and covers the cost of operation.

Artists can apply for both opportunities.
