Installation / Costume Design: Oana Botez-Ban Choreography / Performermance: Irina Constantine Poulos Lighting Design: Lucas Benjaminh Krech Music Composition: Lucian Ban Voices: Oana Botez Ban, Lucretia Briceno, Irina Constantine Poulos Description: "The Fourth World project is a multi-media, performative installation conceived by Oana Botez-Ban and Saviana Stanescu. Its aim is to express the difficult status of a woman migrant/immigrant who had to leave her "third world" country, her feeling of not belonging anywhere, of being In-between. The painful negotiation of feelings, identities and emotions triggered by the process of relocation is what concerns us. In the current post-colonialist context we witness a permanent "negotiation" between major and minor cultures, as well as wars and ethnic conflicts. Therefore THE FOURTH WORLD has a social significance too. It is relevant to the nowadays political situation and empowers the usual voiceless and unprivileged women from everywhere." RISE, NYCselections from repetoire![]() |
Performers: Elaine Benavides, drums/backup vocals; Shelly Ebner on vocals/bass; programming/guitar, NYC underground dj, Die J! Mars;
Genre: Gentle Electric Description: The pop sensations, known as Rise NYC, have just completed their debut album, "Mise en Scene", which was produced by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' drummer, Jim Sclavunos, worked on by ex-Dee Lite member, Supa DJ Dmitri, remixed by Psychic TV's Genesis P-Orridge, Party Monster icon Superstar DJ Keoki plus upcoming techno sensations, The Dirty Criminals and the cover-art was done by legendary NYC artist, Scott E-Walt (Marc Almond, Karen Black, Dolly Parton). There are five original songs on this album followed by five remixes/interpretations. "The reason for this," explains guitarist/programmer Die J! Mars, "is that we feel each songs stands alone as a single and is open to different interpretations." For instance, the original version of "No Harm" is a fusion of stadium rock mixed with arena trance techno, whereas, the "birthday version" keeps the same vocal melodies but moves the song into a down-tempo dubby lounge track. With this concept, Rise NYC covers almost every musical genre from dance to rock giving something for every music lover. If the group could be categorized they would fall under "electronica pop rock" such as Republica, Garbage and P.W.E.I. Larry Tee will be releasing their song "Penny" on his first non-electroclash compilation, "Gentle Electric", in the spring on his label, Mogul Electro; DJ Hell will be putting out an unreleased Rise NYC track, "Said B4", on his next compilation- "International Deejay Gigolo Records Volume 8"; Rise NYC will be featured on a "Tribute to Hong Kong Counterfeit" with their version of "Emotion" out on Kinetik-Media. So, the buzz is definitely on for Rise NYC… Rise NYC is now a trio made up of Shelly Ebner on vocals/bass with programming/guitar by NYC underground dj, Die J! Mars (winner of 2004 NYC Electropop Dj Battle) and most recent member, Juilliard student, Elaine Benavides on drums/backup vocals. The group throws over-the-top multi-media concerts that feel like Eric Bogosian meets Bauhaus meets The I Love Lucy Show. It's 70's sit-coms and 80's megastar concerts rolled into one unforgettable ever-changing piece. Aside from their monologues, tap-dancing and independent interactive movie projections, they've added a Swedish modern dance troupe, set designers, wardrobe stylists, make-up artists and have even staged a few audiences—sort of like going to a Rush concert with Dr. Strange... The result is an experience more than a concert. Having performed at the forefront of NYC's underground nightclub scene such as Kenny Kenny's, Larry Tee's and Mistress Formika's parties, esteemed art-galleries with groups such as Fischer Spooner and Princess Superstar, the band plans to focus their next moves on conquering the rock scene of NYC with a few shows beginning in January of 2005. They will be performing on July 8th at The Delancey with L.A.'s Spookey Ruben (Hi-Hat Records) and then perform in the windows of 42nd Street for The Oasis Festival thrown by The Chashama Artists' Collective later that month. www.risenyc.com |
