Presentation Space Terms and Conditions

chashama Presentation Space - How To Apply

chashama has worked with artists at many different stages in their careers from all over the world. Everyone who meets the following basic eligibility requirements is encouraged to apply:

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older, or have a parent/guardian oversee the project and sign the corresponding paperwork.

  • Applicants must have professional proficiency in written and spoken English.

  • Applicants must be able to provide valid contact information in the form of an email address and/or U.S. phone number.

Application Materials

Presentation Space applications must include:

  1. Five images of recent work that you feel best represents the kind of work you like to do. JPG, PNG, and TIFF files of a maximum 1200px in any direction are accepted. Each image must be titled with your Last Name, underscore, First Name, and image number. Example: Smith_John01.jpg

  2. If your proposal is for an installation, one of the five images must be a sketch detailing how your project will be installed or staged within a space. If you have a particular space in mind, you can download the floorplan from the chashama website and design your sketch around that specific space. If your exhibit design is adaptable to any space, you can submit a more general sketch. Sketches should be submitted as images, and count as one of the five images above.

  3. Artist statement (1500 characters or less).

  4. Project proposal statement (1500 characters or less).

  5. Artist CV including your name, address, email, and phone number, along with exhibition and educational background (1-2 pages).

For film and video artists:

  • Image work samples may be still images from films and/or production stills (your animation table, set building, etc). A video may be submitted via a third-party website (Youtube, Vimeo, etc.) and submitted in a link format in the application in the appropriate area. We recommend you submit a video of at least one video work sample.

In addition to the application materials above, applicants must provide a proposed project title and preferred dates for the project. If there is a time period beyond which you would no longer be interested in doing the project, please indicate that on the application.

It is recommended that applicants proposing a site-specific project visit the space before applying.

Applicants may submit as many project proposals as they would like. Each will be considered separately and in the order they are received. chashama seeks to serve as many artists as possible and has also supported multiple projects proposed by a single lead artist.

Specific Requirements and Restrictions

  • There is a $5 processing fee for the online application which may be paid electronically upon submission of the application. If you do not want to pay the fee, you are welcome to submit your application by mail to:

  • Artists will be granted space for 1-3 weeks. Please stipulate in your application if a specific term length is necessary for your project.

  • Artists selected for Presentation Space in one of chashama’s gallery spaces are responsible for staffing or finding staff for their exhibits during the gallery’s open hours. This does not apply to performance artists or artists exhibiting in a window space.

  • Artists must be capable of installing, de-installing, and setting up any technical equipment for their own projects. chashama will provide technical assistance in an advisory capacity only.

  • Application materials will not be returned. Incomplete, faxed or emailed applications will not be reviewed. chashama is not responsible for lost or misdirected applications.

Presentation Space applications are reviewed on a rolling basis year-round. Given the high volume of applications we receive, the waiting period for Presentation Space can range from six months to one year.

Applicants should receive a confirmation email upon submitting the application, however this is not an acceptance to the program.  If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact the chashama office. After the initial confirmation email, chashama will not contact the applicant until there is an appropriate space available. (No news is not an indication that your proposal was not accepted or that you need to reapply.) If chashama does not accept an artist’s project proposal, the artist will be notified within 6 months of applying. Otherwise, the application will continue to be considered as spaces become available over the next two years. Please keep this timeline in mind when applying.
