studio of Elaine Defibaugh at 461 West 126th Street
Our studio spaces have 24 hour access. There may be certain restrictions on the kind of materials allowed in a given studio venue.
We try to have the population of our studio artists reflect the community the studios are in.
Private studios are subsidized less than the same amount of space in a shared studio.
Artists are selected by a panel of artists, curators, and other arts professionals through a formal application process.
Please join chashama's 'opportunities list for artists' (click this link to go there) so you can be notified as studios become available. At that time, you will be asked to send us a studio application. To submit, please click studio application form.
Project Studios
A Project Studio is a subsidized studio for 1-2 month residencies for work on a specific project.
Applications are always accepted and kept on file if suitable space becomes available.
Your application needs to include specific details of the project you wish to work on.
Selection will be made based upon chashama's interest in the project, and your ability to convince chashama (through your proposal) that you can complete that project.
chashama organizes at least one open studio event for each studio cycle. chashama also partners with other organizations, galleries and independent curators to exhibit the work that has been created within its studios.
We try to fill our studios with artists from the community the studios are in.
All studios are in non-smoking commercial or residential buildings.
All studios are non-live spaces that are to be used for making visual art works only.
All studios are closed to the public - except for during chashama's Open Studios events.
Studio residencies are usually 1 - 12 months in duration.
Studio spaces are granted to artists at a subsidy that is 50 - 100% less than the market value of that space. (amounts artists pay for 150-500 sq feet of chashama studio space typically range between $0 and $250 per month)
