chaNorth is a New York State artist residencyaimed at providing a nourishing, focused environment for emerging artists and writers, as they continue their committed practices. The program offers an opportunity for 5-6 emerging artists to remove themselves from the typical demands of daily life and immerse themselves in a creative live/work space for four weeks. chaNorth is located on five acres of sprawling meadow, adjacent to hundreds of acres of undeveloped woods in the scenic Hudson Valley. Attendees will be provided with a private furnished bedroom and semi-furnished studio. The residency fosters a culture of both serious artistic production and play with a strong focus on healthy communal living. Shared kitchens are stocked with fresh, local, organic produce and whole grains. Cooperatively prepared meals act as the anchor of the program. In addition, residents are asked to contribute 4 hours per week working at McEnroe Organic Farm, allowing artists the opportunity to interact with the environment, the community and agricultural history of the Hudson Valley. With the exception of farm shift and weekly potlucks, this program is intended for residents to have undisrupted time to focus on their continued studio practice. Some programming is suggested but participation is always optional. Feel free to check out the chaNorth facebook page for more images of the residency.
See Below for application information.
Studios: Each resident will have 24 hour access to studios that range in size (estimated around 200+ square feet). Each studio is unique and has varying amounts of wall space and windows. Studio assignments are based on medium and projects proposed. chaNorth is located on a 5 acre homestead property and therefore offers ample outdoor space to host performances and installations. Please note that this is a historic property therefore all possible impacts of the proposed project must be considered before approval. Residents are responsible for restoring the property to its found condition.
Living: Each resident will be assigned a private bedroom with linens. They will have access to either a private or shared bathroom. There are two shared kitchens, a living room with a television and computer, and a patio available for communal use. All residents should be conscious of cleanliness and courtesy in these spaces. There is one unit on the property which is a completely private residence consisting of a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and small studio/living room. This space is ideal for small families, collaborators and writers. Onsite laundry is available free of charge for resident use.
Communal Food and Farm Shift: A significant part of the chaNorth community is based around shared meals and gardening. The kitchens will be stocked with organic produce and meats from McEnroe Farm along with whole foods such as grains and nuts. Meals are primarily vegetarian but may include organic and naturally raised meats 2-3 times a week. Although residents will largely operate their schedules independently, communal lunches are encouraged along with attending weekly potluck dinners. Each week residents participate in a 4 hr farm shift at McEnroe’s Education Garden. chaNorth strongly feels that participating in both aspects of farming and meal preparation allows for a stronger understanding of individual and communal health. Please mention in your application any dietary or physical limitations which may impact these activities.
Programing: The chaNorth Residency aims to provide an open environment which residents can tailor to their individual needs. The residency prioritizes time to focus on artistic development. Residents are encouraged to host individual or group studio visits. chaNorth may arrange for outside artists to conduct studio visits along with facilitating off-site visits with Hudson based artists, residencies, museums and galleries. Residents must arrange transportation for all offsite activities.
Transportation: The chaNorth Residency is located in Pine Plains, NY. The Wassaic Metro North Station, and Hudson Amtrak are the closest train stations. Transportation will be provided to McEnroe Farm for farm shifts and to the Wassaic Metro North Train station on the first and last day of the residency session. Except in the case of emergencies, there is no additional transportation offered to residents. The Hudson Valley has a lot of hiking, swimming, arts festivals, and museums therefore residents are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to bring a car for recreational use.
Fees: Each session fee is $900 plus a fully refundable $100 deposit. Although the program is partially subsidized, the fee includes providing food for the residents and covers the cost of operation.
Applicants: Artists and writers will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability function well in a small community. Along with having a strong commitment to their artistic practices, it is important that the applicants demonstrate interest in communal meals and farm participation. Please note the start and end dates of each residency session. chaNorth is currently accepting applications for Session 3 and will offer spaces in Session 2, should one become available.
